The World Heli Challenge Extreme day kicked off on Thursday with a one run final. We skied an awesome venue accessed only by helicopter called ‘Extreme Arena’ .

Highlights of the day was Ted Davenports near disaster when he set off a class two avalanche that he managed to ski out of and also Travis Rice’s crazy line that he rode.

I came in 2nd place to World Champion Ane Enderud. Funny enough Maria also came in second place in the snowboard women’s field.

First place in the men’s category went to Ted Davenport holding his title from last year. Second place went to Kiwi Sam Smoothy and third place went to Kiwi rider Fraser McDougal.

Awesome job to all the Volkl team riders owning the podium!

Today it was the finals of the Volkl NZ freeski open Slopestyle finals. Australia’s Russ Henshaw captured the men’s slopestyle title with clean, back-to-back double corks, the first a left-side double cork 1080 followed by a right-side double cork 12 in a dramatic final at Cardrona . On the women’s side, it was Kim Lamarre taking out first place, executing a difficult switch zero spin off the big 75-foot kicker.

Tomorrow’s Volkl NZ Freeski Open halfpipe competition is scheduled to get underway at 9:30 a.m. at Cardrona, Stay posted
