Rejoice in Fernie – The shenanigans have started

8 12 2009

Fernie is open for the season and what a spectacular opening day it was.  Thanks to the weather, the highway from Calgary to Fernie was closed so we didn’t get the usual crowds from the city. The Griz had blessed us with a little sprinkle of snow with what had already fallen and with temperatures only lying at an easy -4 it was a great day of celebration.

It was definitely a powder day with the ski hill opening the Timber side with untracked runs for most of the day. When you ski the Kootenays you’re guaranteed an endless playground.

The hill did open earlier than planned (the 28th and 29th of November) but just for the weekend and only the ‘Old Side’ for the heavy snowfalls that had hit Fernie. So they then closed for the week but now opened for the 09/10 winter season.

So right now I’m sitting at home. No skiing for me today and probably not until it warms right up. Today it is a cold – 31 degrees Celsius on the hill but it’s looking like it will warm up in the days to come. They are calling for snow on Wednesday  and more snow for the weekend.  Fingers crossed! For now just gyming it and trying to stay warm.

p.s will post some photos soon!
